About 10 - 20 years ago, it was called faux painting and was hot in home decor. Now, sponge painting and those faux textures are truly dated. However, decorative painting with glazes, paint effects, and antiquing is incredibly popular and on trend right now. See some beautiful examples like the photo here.
Note, your local paint store sells many glazes and decorative paints. Just ask and most will be glad to give you helpful hints to do it yourself.

Decorative painting can make one's furniture look unique - depending on the owner's interest. But it would be much better if one would base the style on his/her character. For example, the woman's femininity is on a higher level, maybe she should paint the furniture with pink, or to make it more personal, her favorite actor/actress, or role model.

When you come up with a good choice of color and match to your interior it will work well and turn as beautiful as you expected.
