Frankly, I don't know if this is practical for any of you, but it's a type of construction that's too beautiful not to share. And honestly, this could be become more and more popular as trees become more scarce and we seek energy-saving, renewable materials in our buildings. But the best characteristic of this is the sheer natural beauty of these walls - they look like stone, granite, or marble.
It's called rammed earth. Where literally they take dirt, cement, water and pressure and create a solid, variegated, hardened material that impenetrable to insects and the weather. Considering it's thickness, it's also naturally insulating.
You must read this article to fully see the beauty of this material. It may not be for everyone but it certainly is stunning and fascinating.

I was curious as to why you said that this construction method was not for everyone; I thought you were referring to its price. Anyway, I did some looking around and found out that this could potentially be a low-cost alternative to modern construction since you can use the earth on the site itself.
The only problem is that it's not as convenient as modern construction method; you need several consecutive sunny days for it to cure.
But I am not an expert in this. And that's another problem, finding an expert to work for you. Maybe in a few years, we will begin to see local contractors offering this serivce.

I said I didn't think it was for everyone because although beautiful, they may prefer drywall that can be painted or wallpapered.

Rammed earth is coming back in style. I read on a major construction blog that the rates of construction are way up. It's a good method, as it's used in several other first world countries and the technology keeps improving.
