Today my oldest son/middle child played in his first football game. I have to say it was somewhat of a surreal experience. Surprisingly, not because my little boy was being pushed over and knocking down other kids. It was surreal in ways I didn't expect. In some regards, it was like any other football game you've ever seen. In others, it wasn't. We had cheerleaders. We had refs with full uniforms. We had a 100 yard field. But some of the boys - my son included - are still trying to figure out the difference between blocking and tackling. But hey, they're 7, 8, and 9. Our team unfortunately went down 12-26. In short, the opponent was bigger, stronger, and had a better grasp of what to do. Football was my first and still-favorite spectator sport, but I never truly appreciated how much there is to understand in order to play it until today. I'll stick with being a fan!
